What is a HSMP or Tier 1 visa?

Tier 1 Applicants refer to individuals who are deemed highly skilled workers by the United Kingdom. In order to apply for a Tier 1 visa, you must first pass a points-based assessment.

You must score total of 75 points from the following categories:

Your attributes (age, qualifications, previous earnings, and experience in the United Kingdom); and
10 points for English language; and
10 points for available maintenance (funds).

If you do not score a minimum of 75 points for your attributes and 10 points for English language and 10 points for available maintenance (funds), your application will be refused.

The requirements that you must meet in order to be awarded points differ depending on whether you are:

applying to enter Tier 1 (General) - highly skilled worker for the first time (initial applications) ; or
applying to extend your existing permission to stay in this category (extension applications), or
applying to extend existing permission to stay granted to you under the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP).

If you are already in the UK, you can switch into a Tier 1 visa if you currently hold leave in the following categories:

Fresh Talent: Working in Scotland;
International Graduates Scheme (IGS);
Postgraduate doctor or dentist;
Student;
Student nurse;
Student re-sitting an exam;
Student writing up a thesis;
Work permit holder.
