What is a visa? A visa is a certificate that is put into your passport or travel document by an Entry Clearance Officer at a British mission overseas. It is about the same size as a standard page in your passport and normally has your photo and details of your visa like duration and type of stay you are allowed.

The visa gives you permission to enter the UK.
When you arrive in the UK, an Immigration Officer may ask you questions, we recommend that you keep all important documents in your hand luggage.

We have made a small but by no mean definitive list to help you:

  1. Your Passport;
  2. Proof of where you are staying in the UK;
  3. Any identity papers or cards;
  4. Bank statements;
  5. Marriage certificates;
  6. Telephone & postal address of anyone you are meeting in the UK;

Do I need a sponsor to enter the UK?

Under the Points Based System (PBS), every migrant from outside the UK (except Tier 1 highly skilled migrants) will need a Certificate of Sponsorship from a sponsor on the Border & Immigration Agency's Sponsors Register in order to obtain a visa.

When does the new Tier system start?

Tier 1 visas: highly skilled workers, such as scientists and entrepreneurs From 29 February 2008

Tier 2 visas: skilled workers with a job offer to fill gaps in United Kingdom labour force In the autumn of 2008

Tier 3 visas: limited numbers of low skilled workers needed to fill temporary labour shortages This tier is currently suspended

Tier 4 visas: students In the spring of 2009

Tier 5 visas: youth mobility and temporary workers: people allowed to work in the United Kingdom for a limited period of time to satisfy primarily non-economic objectives In the autumn of 2008
