Domestic Workers

Domestic Worker Visas

Domestic workers are people who have entered the UK legally with an employer, on a domestic worker visa, to work in a private household.

Permission to stay in the United Kingdom has a time limit. You may change to a different employer as a domestic worker in a private household at any time in the UK. The work must be similar in skill to your original job. ImmigrationDirect can help manage your application to the Home Office to change your employment.

If your employer plans to live here longer, you will normally given permission to stay for up to 12 months at any one time. The entry clearance sticker or stamp in your passport tells you the date your permission to stay ends.

You can travel to and from the United Kingdom to complete your stay if you can show that you are still employed as a domestic worker in a private household.

If you have worked in the United Kingdom for five years and have taken the ‘Life in the UK test’ you can apply for permission to stay for an indefinite period. You can then take any job without Home Office permission.
